DG-DG-DAT

To extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade to increase its luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of 10 beyond its design value. The HL-LHC is the project that will develop the new technologies and be in charge of the design,  production, installation and commissioning of the equipment required to reach this objective.

You will join the Technical coordination team to:
  • Guide the project engineers to identify all the requirements needed to meet the reliability, availability and technical performance of the HL systems such as interface, environmental, operational, product quality assurance or design requirements.
  • Identify with Project engineers the manufacturing processes and their corresponding critical activities (where specific requirements need to be met to mitigate risks) and support them by the application of existing standards or, in their absence, of CERN specific procedures/controls.
  • Advice and support the project engineers on risk assessment, risk reduction and control guiding in the preparation of the technical files.
  • Support on the preparation, communication and dissemination of quality documentation (using CERN specific tools: EDMS, MTF,…).
  • Development of web pages.
  • Support on the preparation of proposals for different EU programsHardware failures, trends and projections.

Profile: Industrial engineer.

Experience with the design of industrial process, quality management or EU proposals is an asset.

Candidates will be expected to possess a good working knowledge of either English or French.

Candidates will face a video interview and if required a face interview.

IT-CF-FPP

The CERN IT Facility Planning and Procurement team is technical responsible for the procurement of computer servers and storage for the centralised computing facilities at CERN-Geneva and Wigner institute in Budapest.

All IT Data Centre assets are gradually being moved into Infor EAM assets management system. This includes all servers, storage units, networking devices, PDUs, racks and stocks of spare parts.

The project in this work package consists of development of tools and procedures required for stock and assets management in Infor EAM:

  • Hardware failures, trends and projections.
  • Hardware inventory based on Infor EAM data with aggregation views like CC by number as well as hardware source of truth for AI (Foreman, Puppet).
  • Repair service contractor performance and resource projections.
  • Stock management and work orders.
  • New lightweight agent for automated collection and aggregation of assets data from Linux servers and add support for new architectures if required.
Duties: Mainly being a user of Infor EAM software to gather information about assests and computer hardware.

Profile: Industrial engineer with good command of software applications (as user) and basic knowledge about Linux and scripting languages.

IT Engineers (systems speciality) can also be considered as candidates. But please note that most of the work will consist on using Infor EAM software, little programming will be required.

Knowledge of computer hardware is an asset.

Candidates will face a test before the interviews (date to be defined) similar to the following one. Check here: http://ais.web.cern.ch/ais/recruitment/.

IT-CF-MMT

The IT Computing Facilities group is in charge of the data centres CERN-Geneva and Wigner-Budapest. With the increasing needs of compute and storage resources for the CERN Large Hadron Collider data analysis, it is expected that the CERN private cloud will grow to 15,000 servers and over 100,000 virtual machines within three years.

The tasks to be performed as part of this work package contribute to a project to enhance the management and configuration of the intelligent power distribution units, and monitoring of power and environmental data.

The following technologies are central to the project: cloud tools (e.g. openstack), central configuration management tools (e.g. puppet) and big data tools (e.g. hadoop).

Requirements: Programming skills and good knowledge of Linux based systems.

Experience with cloud, configuration management and big data tools is an asset.

Candidates will face a test before the interviews (date to be defined) similar to the following one. Check here: http://ais.web.cern.ch/ais/recruitment/.

IT-CIS-AVC

The CERN IT-CIS-AVC section is responsible for the management and operation of a large and massively distributed videoconference infrastructure based on the Vidyo product serving the LHC worldwide dispersed community with more than 4 million minutes of videoconference per month, more than 18,000 registered users and 40,000 client downloads.

It is also responsible for the Webcast and Recording Service with several very large webcasts per month, streaming a daily average of 85GB of data, on internal CERN infrastructure, and external CDNs for extra scalability on very large events that can go up to 500k viewers and a throughput of 40 Gb/s.

Taking into account the fast extension needed for these services, the PJAS will work on a project of enhancement and further development of the service monitoring, dashboards and indicators, on the implementation of emerging adaptative streaming technologies and improvement of support on mobile platforms (Smartphones and Tablets). She/He will collaborate closely with the CERN staff for the design, requirements assessment, prototyping and testing of the developed software.

The tasks to be performed as part of this work package are the following:

Vidyo Service:
  • Implement the monitoring/reporting tools for each new tenant of Vidyo for a Global Service extension, specifically: Create virtual monitoring images to distribute to clients.
  • Investigate the use of a cloud-init script to initiate pre-configured images with the monitoring solution for any given tenant.
  • Investigate a mechanism for which the room conference PCs get automatically logged off from the Vidyo client in case the user leaves his credentials logged on.
Webcast Service:
  • Implement adaptive streaming over http using MPEG-Dash for the Webcast service and CDS (CERN Document Server) that includes improvement of user experience when playing videos and movies from CDS and improve the Webcast service website in order to fully support mobile/tablet devices (iOS and Android).
Requirements: The profile sought is a web developer with practical experience (in technologies like Python, Django, MySQL would be a plus).

Candidates will face a test before the interviews (date to be defined) similar to the following one. Check here: http://ais.web.cern.ch/ais/recruitment/.

IT-DB-DBB

The Database Services (DB) Group is responsible for all aspects of database service provision at CERN—including support or the control and operation of the LHC accelerator and support for the online and offline activities of the LHC experiments as well as support for Administrative Information Services.

CERN's Database Services Group has introduced support for MySQL, PostgreSQL and Oracle database applications through the provision of an on-demand framework that runs on top of a mix of virtual and physical database servers.

The project consists in two parts:
  • Consolidation and integration with the IT-DB framework. In particular, research new ways to further consolidate database services via, for example, Linux containers, and develop Puppet modules to configure database instances in a data driven fashion  as well as following developments in Openstack Trove project.
  • Evolve the DataBase on Demand platform and implement new functionality requested by CERN community, including expansion of the web interface (java based). Work also includes operational support. Study different ways to increase high availability, for example replication, at database or storage level.

Requirements:
  • Software development in procedural language (Perl, Python, Java, bash).
  •  Database administration or development (SQL, PL/SQL).
  •  Web development (Java EE).
Candidates will face a test before the interviews (date to be defined) similar to the following one. Check here: http://ais.web.cern.ch/ais/recruitment/.
