Project Name: Evolution of GitLab Service and Migration of SVN to GitLab

Project Description
:
With the deployment of GitLab as the main code hosting platform, and its importance for both the IT department and the LHC experiments, the selected person will work on ensuring the stability and evolution of GitLab.

In addition, in view of the discontinuation of AFS we expect to discontinue SVN by end of LS2 (Long Shutdown in 2019).

Since GitLab works very differently than SVN, significant preparation work is required and we need to provide CERN developers with tools and recipes to migration their code from SVN to GitLab.

Technical skills:
  • Experience or strong interest in Version Control systems (SVN, Git) and code development lifecycle (code review, tests, pull requests, open source projects hosted on GitHub.com or similar platforms...)
  • Effective skills for communication with team members and the community of developers at CERN; interest in providing high quality support to the developer community.
  • Goal-oriented personality with ability to resolve issues autonomously.
  • Experience in Linux system administration and Docker containers would be a plus.

IT-CM-IS

Project Name: Accounting Enhancements

Project Description
:
CERN’s computing centres run more than 200k CPU cores dedicated to physics data processing. With such a large data centre, it’s critical to ensure that the resources are being used efficiently and correctly and to ensure the prompt and automated detection of operational problems.

The project will enhance CERN IT’s accounting and ops analytics activity, with aim of using our new analytics and dashboard machinery (based on Hadoop/Spark/ES/Kibana) to help identify and resolve issues, both individual node issues and global effects, due to, for example, configuration changes or changes in experiment usage patterns (e.g. efficiency problems due to a new release globally using more swap).

The project will also extend the current accounting approach used for compute resources to all IT services, both cloud, services and physical hardware based. This will allow IT to account in an automated way for its services and help stakeholders understand the resource usage in the centre.

Technical skills:
  • The team is organised in a devops style and currently makes use of Python, Go, Spark, Hadoop, ElasticSearch, Grafana and Kibana.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Fluent English, knowledge of French appreciated.

Starting date:
To be agreed during interview. Tentatively September 2017.

Candidates may be selected through a video interview and if required a face-to-face interview will be conducted.

This in-house software based on PERL is reaching its limit in term support and architecture.

The proposed project is to redefine the DNS network architecture to introduce a redundant solution for the master DNS and recode, with a modern language (such as Python).

Technical skills:
  • Programming ability, preferably with knowledge of Python.
  • Some knowledge of DNS would be useful but is not essential.

IT-CDA-WF2

Project Name: CERN Search Service Evolution and Maintenance– Implementation of CERN Search Strategy.

Project Description
:
The new University candidate will, in addition to working on the next generation of the CERN Search service, work on the implementation and rollout of Search as a Service, offered individually to document collection owners (Indico, EDMS, CDS, Web pages).

This will enable us to deliver an aggregation of several smaller Search as a Service instances instead of providing one global search, increasing the flexibility for the different document collections and reducing the maintenance efforts needed to run the service.

The Web Frameworks section of the IT-CDA group provides Web content and application publishing services, and software development tools for version control and issue tracking. The CERN Web Services team as part of the Web Frameworks section operates more than 100 Web servers that host about 14,000 Web sites on a wide range of technologies, comprising content and collaboration management systems such as Drupal, SharePoint, TWiki, and classic Web Hosting servers based on Windows/IIS and Linux Apache and last but not least a Platform as a Service for Web Applications container solution based on OpenShift Origin.

In addition the CERN Web Services provide the Enterprise Search Solution "CERN Search" (https://cern.ch/search) giving access to a wide range of internal document repositories (CERN Web Pages, Indico Conference system, CDS document server, EDMS engineering document management system, etc.).  "CERN Search" provides both a backend search service for document application owners and a public search interface enabling users to search across all document collections. The present solution is based on SharePoint 2013/2016.

The new University candidate will work in the context of the CERN Search project, as part of the CERN Web Services team, and participate in the implementation and evolution of the Enterprise Search Solution. One of the main tasks of the project will be the implementation of the next generation of the service offering, namely "Search as a Service". The aim is to provide individual Elasticsearch based instances for the different document collections. This will allow a higher level of flexibility for the individual instances in terms of selecting relevant metadata and search ranking optimizations. In addition the tasks include the maintenance of the present solution and the migration towards the new "Search as a Service".

The new University candidate will gain experience with the integration of recent information access technologies and with the development of web based applications, in particular with Elasticsearch and large scale SharePoint 2013/2016 installations. They will also have the opportunity to develop skills in the management of a large web infrastructure based on widely adopted technologies and products (Windows/IIS, Linus/Apache, Elasticsearch, .Net framework, SharePoint, Drupal, C#, Python, PHP, PowerShell).

Technical skills:
  • Computer science engineer.
  • Good knowledge or be willing to learn Web technologies (HTTP, HTML, SOAP, XML) as well as Web application development technologies (.NET, SharePoint, Elasticsearch, PHP, Python).
  • Knowledge of and experience with software Container technology and scripting techniques for computer configuration, automation and system administration would be an asset.Good communication skills.
  • Fluent English, knowledge of French appreciated.

Starting date:
To be agreed during interview. Tentatively November 1, 2017.

Candidates may be selected through a video interview and if required a face-to-face interview will be conducted.
