EN-MEF-SU

Evolution of the Survey and Alignment Database and its APEX Interface
The activities of the Large Scale Metrology Section are centred around the capture, management, and processing of measurement data, the derived survey and alignment parameters and other information essential to the process.

The Survey team uses an in-house Oracle database application for data storage, to manage the data flow, and to guide the users through internal and external data processing system.

The team responsible for the database application are completing the migration from Oracle Forms to Oracle APEX, which will be followed by a consolidation of the developments, including code refactoring and updates to the database structure.

This will then lead on to a number of new developments that are necessary to adapt to changes in other CERN databases, the representation of accelerator components, and the processing applications. The successful candidate will participate fully in all of these activities.

Skills
Databases: MySQL, Oracle
Information Technologies: Using web application frameworks (e.g. Django, GWT, APEX)
Programming Languages: Java, Javascript, SQL, PL/SQL or similar

Training Value
The successful candidate will gain experience in large scale database applications for the alignment data of the largest accelerator complex in the world.

EN-EL-HT

Refurbishment of electrical substations
The High Voltage Section in the Electrical Engineering Group is responsible for the CERN high voltage power distribution network. The main activities of the section include the design of network extensions and new HV substations, the refurbishment of old substations, the specification and procurement of HV equipment and the execution of network analysis (such as load flow or short circuit studies).

As a fellow joining the Section, you will be asked to actively participate to projects for the refurbishment of electrical substations and activities related to HV equipment.

In the context of projects you are expected to participate actively to:
  • Feasibility studies;
  • Detailed engineering;
  • Protection coordination studies;
  • Planning and follow-up of activities on site;
  • Commissioning activities;
In the context of activities related to HV equipment you are expected to participate actively to the activities carried out by the equipment responsible:

Prepare documents for calls for tenders;
  • Plan and coordinate maintenance activities;
  • Define and apply the strategy for the management of the assets in the databases;
  • Prepare tests and commissioning procedures;
  • Commission equipment on site, prepare and archive the test reports;
You are expected to progressively acquire a good knowledge of the topology of CERN HV network and technical characteristics of HV equipment.

Skills

The activities require good analytical skills and a very good team working attitude.

IT-OIS-CV

Enable CERN Hybrid Cloud

As part of the evaluation of future data centre architectures, CERN has been evaluating the use of cloud resources in public cloud facilities. Following the CERN cost analysis and initial testing, one approach that has been identified is to use bare metal server hosting. The hosting company would be responsible for the facilities and server procurement while CERN would be responsible for the system administration of the servers.

In order to use these resources, a number of enhancements to CERN's processes and tools would be required.

The project associate would work to extend the CERN OpenStack based cloud to transparently include these remote resources, adapt the deployment tools to include support for remote server management and develop the appropriate performance monitoring agents to validate service levels.

This will also permit the CERN LHC experiments to use these resources transparently without significant modification of their existing workflows.

Skills

  • Linux
  • Networking
  • K nowledge of cloud technologies such as OpenStack.
  • Configuration management systems such as Puppet would be an asset.

Estimated starting date: January-February 2016.

IT-PES-PS

Devops manager for massive Grid services

CERN-IT is running a large set of Grid services for more than 10'000 users from physics collaborations on a total of more than 4'000 physical and virtual servers (the latter as part of the large-scale OpenStack-based private CERN cloud).

These servers are configured by a large-scale configuration management system based on Puppet and Foreman.

The Project associate will be part of a team that is responsible for planning, setting up, running and developing services mostly under Linux in a DevOps approach. The PJAS' main activities will include:
  • planning and deployment of services
  • monitoring of service level and quality (some developments likely to be involved)
  • taking corrective actions in case of service degradation
  • managing life-cycles of software and hardware required for the services
  • serving as escalation point for user support questions

Skills

  • at least a master degree in computer science, physics or a related field
  • knowledge of and experience with Linux system administration
  • knowledge of and experience with Python programming
  • experience or at least significant interest in managing large Linux clusters and service management
  • good level of English (preferred) or French with the ability to draw up technical specifications and reports and to give presentations
  • effective skills for communication with team members and users; ability to work well in teams as well as autonomously
Knowledge of Puppet, monitoring systems, virtualisation techniques, Grid services, and/or network batch systems (particularly HTCondor) would be an advantage.

Estimated starting date: October 2015.

IT-PES-ES

Techlab manager

CERN runs a technology laboratory (TechLab) as a platform for tests and software developments taking advantage of computing architectures not currently provided by CERN's mainstream resources. TechLab provides in particular systems based on alternative CPU architectures (ARM and other SoC, Atom, OpenPower) as well as accelerators (nVidia, Intel Phi etc.).

The Project associate will contribute to the procurement of the systems, install and maintain them, and assist users with their tests and developments.

Specifically the PJAS will be responsible of:

  • installing and re-installing the hardware, the operating system and relevant software packages including the CUDA and MPSS software stacks
  • keeping the systems up to date
  • helping users perform their tests and developments
  • liaising with other teams within the IT Department (procurement, operations, network, Linux support etc.) to ensure smooth integration into the CERN environment
