IT-CM-IS
Filiation:
Compute & Monitoring group, Infrastructure
Services.
Project
Name:
Compute Efficiency Framework.
Project Description:
The project will build on the compute accounting and
analysis activity within IT-CM, with aim of using IT's
analytics and dashboard machinery
(Hadoop/Spark/ES/Kibana) to reliably deliver compute
and cloud accounting and efficiency for WLCG and for
local analysis.
The project will also integrate experiment job
performance data to detect passively drops in node
performance (both locally and external cloud) which
can then be used to automatically highlight node or
other operational issue, potentially scheduling via
HTCondor fast benchmarks to re-verify compliance to
the expected service level.
This, together with an operational efficiency
dashboard, should give us immediate indication of
individual node issues, global effects, such as
configuration modifications or experiment specific
changes such as high memory with new releases.
Required
Skills:
Python
Linux
Desirable: ElasticSearch, Kibana, Spark
Starting date: To
be agreed during interview.
Candidates
will be selected through a video interview and if
required a face-to-face interview will be conducted.

IT-CM-MM
Filiation:
Compute & Monitoring group, Monitoring &
Messaging section.
Project
Name:
Aggregation and correlation for alarms and
diagnostics.
Project Description:
Currently monitoring data from the IT groups and
outside is collected but the real value is not
realised as it could be used more effectively for
understanding the overall behaviour, dependencies and
reason of problems and failures.
Operational costs will be reduced by automating the
aggregation and correlation of monitoring data across
different services. This process will benefit from
programmatically aggregating and correlating
fine-grained information into precise alarms and
diagnostics. For instance, using the WLCG metrics, a
site issue root cause can be determined between
network link issues, data contention or job failures
in real time. Another example would be distinguishing
power, switch, hypervisor or VM issues and routing the
ticket to the correct destination while providing
notifications to the service managers affected by the
problem. Similar aggregation operations could be
performed to gather metrics for particular sets of
jobs based on their hardware configurations.
In order to achieve these improvements we need to
coordinate the collection of key metrics from
different IT services into a common architecture and
apply established techniques and tools (e.g.
Hadoop/Spark) for stream analysis of monitoring data.
The project would define such common framework, help
all IT groups to provide the relevant data, and
support the common implementation using the standard
building blocks of the monitoring architecture.
Required
Skills:
Linux
Scripting
Desirable: Hadoop, Spark
Starting
date: To
be agreed during interview.
Candidates
will be selected through a video interview and if
required a face-to-face interview will be conducted.
