Project
Name:
Push Notifications project.
Project Description:
Today, most of CERN Applications and Services are
sending notifications to the CERN community via
e-mail. E-mail cluttering and abuse makes
notifications invasive and less effective.
We are looking to implement a solution, which will
offer meaningful notifications across our
heterogeneous environment of computing devices on
both desktops and mobiles.
Detailed
description of Activity:
The new service will propose opt-in and opt-out
notifications, which will be delivered on
devices of any flavour through live
notifications, and access to a notifications hub
where all notifications will be made available
along with subscription options.
The service will provide easy-to-use APIs to
receive notifications from existing services,
facilitating the integration. The system will
then aggregate all the information and deliver
to the end user according to his personal
choice.
Notifications delivery will happen via different
communication channels according with the user
preferences. Those can be on the desktop, mobile
(via SMS or push notification) or e-mail based
summaries that will include groups of
notifications.
The candidate will significantly contribute to
the development and roll out of this system to
production. You will be responsible to
incrementally improve an initial prototype
developed by experienced members of the IT-CDA
group with expertise on web, mobile and
infrastructure deployment.
Strong emphasis will be given on the development
of the core component of the system
(notifications hub) which is based on Python
running on OpenShift.
It is aimed to develop a complete and
redistributable solution by giving preference to
open source technologies and frameworks
Technical skills:
- Computer
science engineer:
- Advanced
knowledge on modern web application
development technologies and frameworks:
Python, Flask, Angular, Vue.js or similar
- Experience
with mobile development frameworks like
React, AngularJS
- Knowledge
and experience with software containers
technology (Docker, OpenShift) and scripting
techniques for computer configuration,
automation and system administration would
be an asset.
Starting date: 01.06.2018.
Candidates
may be selected through a video interview and if
required a face-to-face interview will be conducted.

Project
Name:
Redefine the DNS network architecture to introduce a
redundant solution for the master DNS and recode
Project Description:
The configuration of the CERN IT central DNS
servers, based on BIND DNS, is generated
automatically, from zero, every 10 minutes thanks to
a software developed at CERN several years ago and
evolved over time.
This in-house software based on PERL is reaching its
limit in term of support and architecture.
The proposed project is to re-implement that
software with a modern language such as Python, in a
way that it runs faster, and that it can accommodate
to changes in the DNS network architecture such as
the introduction of a redundant solution for the
master DNS or the adoption a DNS anycast
architecture solution.
Detailed
description of Activity:
The candidate will collaborate with our
Network experts and Database and Software
experts in order to understand the
requirements from the DNS service point of
view on one side, and the code efficiency,
robustness, maintainability, test and
production environments on the other side.
Technical skills:
Computer engineer with experience in
software design, development (Python,
object-orientation), testing, code versioning (Git).
Knowledge in networking (DNS) is also a need.
Starting date: 01.06.2018.
Candidates
may be selected through a video interview and if
required a face-to-face interview will be conducted.
